AWAY FROM THE CROWDS

4, 6 or 8 hours Private car tour to the countryside and windmills, away from the crowds. No hurry, no worries; Get a lot of information about Dutch history, culture, architecture and society. Historical towns & villages, Windmills, Cheese, Wooden shoes, green farmland, cows, canals & dikes.

4 Hour Tour

09.30AM – 13.30 PM: Drive to the north of Amsterdam (about 1 hour) passing reclaimed land: Unesco World Heritage of “Beemster Polder”(=reclaimed land), see the windmills of Schermerhorn, drive a scenic route passing green fields, dikes, canals and some pretty villages. Have a walk in the village “De Rijp”, drive half an hour to Edam and have walk in this scenic small town, famous for “Edam Cheese”. Drive back to Amsterdam.

6 Hour Tour

09.30 AM – 15.30 PM: see above, plus:, see the interior of a windmill dating 1634, learn how it works and how people were living in a windmill + having a light lunch in Edam and, if time allows: visit the former fishermen’s island of Marken

8 Hour Tour

09.30 AM – 17.30 PM: See above, plus: start in the morning: one hour driving, to historical town of Alkmaar, famous for its traditional cheese market (Friday morning, April – September). Have a 1.5 hour walking tour in this beautiful town, full of history. Learn about Dutch Cheese (maybe taste & buy? It is up to you!) Alkmaar has authentic houses, (food)shops, it has an interesting cheese market building, a 15th Century townhall, windmills and a cathedral. Worthwhile visiting!

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Languages: English & German & Dutch & Frisian.
  • Type of car: Toyota Prius Wagon, having 6 passengers seats. (room for 4 adults and 2 children)
  • Pick up & drop off at your hotel, Air B&B, cruise ship terminal in Amsterdam Centre
  • Included: tickets, your experienced private guide, local taxes, parking fees, free bottles of water in the car, pick nick basket, containing
    orange juice, cookies, chocolate, peppermints, “knackebröd” with cheese etc.
  • Number of People: 1 – 6 people, (must be able to walk some distances: walking tour Alkmaar takes ± one hour).
  • Cheese market in Edam on Wednesday morning in July/August. In Alkmaar Friday morning April- September
  • Driving time: about 1 1/2 hour, to the north of Amsterdam, in stages of ± 30 min. back to Amsterdam.
  • Advise for clothing: Dutch weather in the countrysite can be windy & rainy. Best to check the weather forecast.
  • Alternative visit: from November – April: visit the windmills of Zaansche Schans, as Schermer mills are closed in winter season
